Kern Microtechnik GmbH and ENCOMA BV at the MTC 2025

Thursday 17th April starts the Manufacturing Technology Conference. A deep dive into the world of manufacturability!

Don’t miss the top-class Tech Talk by Fabian Tripkewitz, M. Sc., R&D Engineer at Kern Microtechnik GmbH: “Ductile Cutting Regime in Hard and Brittle Materials” (11:30 in MTC2). His work deals with the optimisation of precision five-axis machine tools. With a focus on the development and integration of high-precision hydrostatic rotary axes.

A sneak preview to his Tech Talk: technical ceramics, known for their hardness, high and exceptional temperature and chemical stability, are ideal for precision applications in high-tech industries. However, their brittleness makes producing components with flawless finishes costly. The ductile cutting regime, which shifts brittle fracture to high-pressure phase transformation, addresses this challenge. Original research by Kern Microtechnik investigated this effect through milling experiments on a precision KERN machine. The results were analysed via GI-XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and other techniques. On average, the surface roughness in SiC and SiSiC surfaces was improved by one order of magnitude over the industry standard, alongside reduced subsurface damage.
